Westport's Biggest Loser
Our first ever Westport Baptist Church Biggest Loser contest began on Sunday, April 19. We have a total of 16 people participating.
Each week, the contest administrator, Melissa Jeffries, will calculate the percentage of weight loss for each individual and report on the top 5 for each week. Percentage of weight loss is calculated using the following method:
Weight loss for the week (x) 100 / the previous week's weight
Example: I weighed 150 last week and 146.8 this week. I lost 3.2 pounds over the week. The percentage of weight loss would be 3.2x100 = 320/150=2.13% for the week
At the conclusion of the contest, the winner will be determined by total weight loss from the initial weigh in to the final weigh in.
The short term goal is to lose pounds, but the ultimate goal is to develop a healthier lifestyle that involves exercise and a healthy variety of food choices that will improve overall health and well being.

Losing weight is tough and I am so proud of each of you that took the first steps to a healthier you! It wasn't easy, but many of you have lost 5, 10 or more pounds over the last 10 weeks! Keep up the great work. Decreasing your weight through a healthy diet and exercise increases muscle, decreases fat and has been shown to have tremendous health benefits, such as decreased cholesterol, decreased triglycerides, stable blood sugar levels, decreased fatigue, decreased incidence of depression and more. So every time you start to work out, keep in mind the benefits that your body and mind will reap!!

A note from Melissa:
Someone had a question about target heart rate during an exercise program so here is a little information about that. Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) is the upper limit of your heart rate range, basically the high end of what your cardiovascular system can handle during vigorous exercise. To calculate MHR simply take 220 minus your age. At 40 years old my MHR would be 180.
During vigorous exercise you should shoot for between 60-85% of your MHR. This range is called your Target Heart Rate (THR). Ideally you would start at 60% and gradually increase to 85% over time as your body adjusted to the new exercise routine. So as I begin a new exercise program, initially I would try and keep my heart rate around 104-126 (60-70%) during vigorous excersie and gradually increase to around 153 (85%) for optimum benefit.
The top five individuals for week #5 are:
#5 Gail Sowell with a loss of .83%
#4 Debbie Gorbandt with a loss of .84%
#3 Donnie Winters with a loss of .86%
#2 DeWayne Sowell with a loss of .88%
And our winner for week #5 with a loss of 1.03% is Brian Sewell.

Everybody is doing so good and we are already at week #4. I think a few got discouraged at their weight loss, but remember, it takes time...and the best combination is a healthy diet and exercise. And for those that are starting an exercise for the first time, they may actually see a slow down in weight loss or even weight gain at first as they build new muscle. But the good news is this...muscle burns more calories than fat and as it replaces fat stores it works harder to burn calories and excess fat!! So the payoff is big in the long run!
The top five individuals for week #4 are:
#5 Stephanie Andersonwith a loss of 1.27%
#4 Roy Horton with a loss of 1.43%
#3 Rhonda Sewell with a loss of 1.46%
